How do you find a Health Coach?

Congratulations for taking this first step toward health and vitality. The first question to ask is “why am I looking for a health coach and what do I want to achieve”?  The answer to this question is the key to finding the perfect health coach for you.

Why am I looking for a Health Coach?looking

There are many different kinds of coaches and various names for similar services.  So the first thing to do would be to determine which kind of coach you’re actually looking for and then determine the different titles that they could be using.

A Health Coach is trained in the three facets of creating a healthy lifestyle; nutrition, exercise, and behavior modification.  Other titles which have a similar focus are Wellness Coach, Holistic Health Coach,  and Health and Wellness Coach, depending on who provides the training.

Some of the reasons that people seek the services of a Health Coach:

  • Losing weight, especially when they’ve already tried numerous diets without success
  • Their doctor recommended one due to health concerns
  • Their insurance company provides one
  • Sleeping better
  • Having more energy
  • Reducing the amount of medications that they are taking

What do I want to achieve?

health coachingThis is a good thing to know before you start looking for a Health Coach, and definitely before you set up an appointment.  If you want to lose weight, then you will probably be very clear about that.  You might not know what’s a reasonable amount to expect to lose in a specific amount of time, but the Health Coach can help you clarify that.

This is very much related to why you’re looking for a Health Coach, but a little more specific.  You might want more energy, and it’s important to determine what this energy will allow you to achieve.  Do you want to be able to chase your grandchildren around the house?  Are you planning a vacation where you’ll be walking or busy doing things?  Do you find yourself falling asleep at your desk in the middle of the afternoon?

I’m ready… now what?

Did you know that you’re already well on your way to living the lifestyle that you’ve been dreaming about?  You may not know it, but you’ve already passed through several phases just to get to this point.  This means that you have a certain level of commitment, which increases your chances of success.  How about that?

Now that you’re in the preparation phase, you’re ready to check things out more thoroughly and actually talk to someone.  Then, once you’ve talked to someone and become convinced that this is the right move for you, you’re finally ready to take action.  Now, where’s the coach?

Google “Health Coach”

You’ll get approximately 112 million results!  thousands of peopleThe top ones will be organizations that train Health Coaches.  That’s not what you’re looking for.  You’ll get definitions and job postings.  Then you’ll finally get to actual coaches’ websites.  The first three I clicked on had links to the contact page that didn’t work.  Uh oh.

This is NOT the way you want to find a Health Coach.

Directories of Health Coaches

There are several organizations which currently train Health Coaches and the number of organizations is growing due to the demand.  There’s a wide variation in the type of training provided, with most providing online or web-based training.  Some, like Duke Integrative Medicine, require classroom training onsite.

This is by no means an all-inclusive list, but you can use these links to search for Health Coaches who have been trained and passed tests to become a Health Coach.

Now it’s up to you to take the next steptaking step2

You got yourself this far, so you’re halfway there.  You have the information you need to take the next step.  You have choices to make.  You can call, email, or comment below to talk to me.  Or you can search on one of the sites that I referenced above.  Oh… there’s one more thing.

How do you want to work with your Coach?

Most Health Coaches work with their clients via phone, skype, or even email.  However, you can also work in person.  When you search for a Coach, if you want one who will either come to you or who has a studio in your area, you can search by state or sometimes by zipcode.  If you’re going to be working together via phone or skype, it probably doesn’t matter where they are physically located.  It might be handy if they’re in the same or a nearby time zone, but it’s not really necessary.  They could even be halfway around the world!

I hope that this article has been worthwhile to you and that it’s provided everything that you need in order to take the next step.  If there’s anything else you’d like me to cover, please tell me in a comment below.

I look forward to hearing from you, and I hope to join you or at the very least hear about your journey to health and vitality.

here's to you
