Product Description:

The ProPur Big stainless steel water purification system is the most popular size unit and is ideal for medium size groups of 2 to 4 people, whether at home, office, vacation, camping or college dorms. The newest ProOne-G 2.0 7″ filter element does it all – Increase pH, remove FLUORIDE, chemicals, sediment and other heavy metals – Advanced manufacturing technology combines silver impregnated white ceramic with new AquaMetix advanced media for removal of fluoride and other heavy metals – all in ONE filter element. No more add-on fluoride filters that slow down flow rate or hang into the lower container reducing fill capacity. Easy to install, use and clean – NO priming required. New ProOne filter elements are good for up to 2,400 gallons per pair – Replace your ProOne filter elements just once a year.

Pros and Cons:

Pros

  • The biggest advantage over the competition is the new ProOne filter element which removes contaminants and fluoride all in one filter.  Only ProOne™G2.0  Water & Fluoride filter element helps reduce or remove VOC’s, pesticides, herbicides including Glyphosate, chloramines (ammonia with chlorine), monochloramines, hydrofluorosilicic acid (the latest form of fluoride not covered by other fluoride filter brands), sodium hexa fluorosilicate and more – increases pH up to 9.5. propur filter
  • No priming required for the filter.
  • One piece stainless steel construction.
  • Water smells and tastes better.
  • 2 year warranty (not pro-rated)
  • The spigot is all metal

Cons

  • It takes time for the water to filter through the elements to the bottom container.  It’s best to fill it up at night so that by morning the water will be available.
  • Heavy metals removal as tested through an independent laboratory are not as good as some other brands, including the Big Berkey.
  • The knob in the lid seems to have a design flaw and is not easy to install.
  • It doesn’t come with the sight glass spigot so you can see how much water is in the lower chamber.  It can be purchased separately (and is recommended).

Who is it for?

Gravity filter systems are for anyone concerned about the quality of their drinking water.  They have been used for many years because they are economical and easy to use.  They are commonly used by disaster relief organizations because they require no electricity and can be set up quickly in an emergency.  Not only are they great for home use, but are also used at the office, camping, or at the hotel.

Overview

ProPur manufactures several different sizes to fit the needs of any family.

propursystemspage2ProPur gravity filter systems come in 5 different sizes.  Sizes from largest to smallest are: King, Big, Nomad, Traveler, and Scout.  All systems are made of stainless steel, and come with their exclusive stainless steel spigot, and non-slip pad.  Each system comes with two ProOne G2.0 filters which not only filter out pathogens and contaminants, but also filter out fluoride.

Customer Support

Most of the reviews I read indicated that the company replaced defective parts and was responsive to requests.

Price

There are several options in design that add to the price, but the standard prices are $339 for the King, $279 for the Big, $215 for the Nomad, $205 for the Traveler, and $99 for the Scout.  All are available through ProPur or amazon.

Final Verdict

Now that I’ve researched both the ProPur and the Berkey, I think the edge clearly goes to Berkey.  The Berkey systems do better with virus removal as well as removal of heavy metals.  Either system would be an improvement over drinking tap water or bottled water.

You’re welcome. Drinking water is the most important thing you can do for your body!

I’ve owned a Berkey for a number of years and have been looking into Propur lately, too. I agree with you that Berkey has a slight edge over Propur, but I don’t think it’s significant. I do really like the idea of not having to prime the filters with a Propur. I always end up soaking wet every time I have to prime my Berkey filters!

      Hi Marge,
That sounds like it might be a good reason to switch to Propur. They will both certainly be much better than drinking tap water. Thanks for your comment.
